What is the difference between a chiropodist and podiatrist?

Ontario is the last place in the world to use the title chiropodist for foot specialists, following an older U.K. model. However, even in the U.K., the profession has transitioned to the title podiatrist. In Ontario, podiatrists are those who trained in the U.S. and have been granted the ability to perform bone surgery. However, only a small number of podiatrists in Ontario still perform these procedures, as foot and ankle surgery now primarily falls under the scope of orthopedic surgeons.

Despite the title differences, both chiropodists and podiatrists are medical professionals who can:

-Assess foot and ankle conditions

-Prescribe medications when necessary

-Perform injections for specific conditions

-Perform soft tissue surgery

-Prescribe and fit orthotics to address biomechanical issues and provide support
